No queda nada para que salga de imprenta el tercer número de la Revista Menta con mis ilustraciones para un cuento de Marta Sanz. Como todo el trabajo de esta autora está lleno de inteligencia e ironía. Y nos interroga acerca de quiénes creemos que nos aprecian y del significado de las propinas que, a veces, no sabemos cuándo las damos, las recibimos o si parecen más una limosna.

I can't wait to see the print version of my illustrations for Menta Magazine. Illustrating Marta Sanz's story was quite a challenge. This author is very smart and ironic, and the story had this punch-like quality hard to pin down in the context of this magazine whose baseline is "the art of living slow". Anyway, it was a challenge and a pleasure. This is a sneak preview.

Alas - Wings

I so much enjoyed sketching and illustrating this story by Albert Espinosa. It manages to magically explain the death of a friend to children. It is much more complex story that it may seem at first. There are a lot of interesting dualities between, friends, adult and young self, water an reflections...

Felix has got a new bike. It's made of recycled parts and made in Madagascar. Got it at a Fair Trade shop in Madrid. He's learned to bike so fast! Will Julian and Edmund want a bike too?

Felix se ha hecho con una bicicleta ecológica y reciclada. La ha comprado en Ecomanía en Chueca, Madrid. Está encantado de por viajar tan rápido. ¿Qué pensarán Julian y Edmundo? Pronto lo sabrá.

Cine Ideal

El Cine Ideal abrió sus puertas hace más de 100 años, exactamente en 1916. ha quedado precioso con la restauración que terminó hace menos de un año. Las vidrieras le dan un toque mágico de noche. En realidad, no es tan amarillo, pero es que este color da mucha alegría.

Cine Ideal opened its doors n 1916. It was recently restored so now lit ooks as it did a hundred years ago. The beautiful stained glasses in its façade make it look really magical at night.

Tiempo de madroños - Madroño berries time

La familia de El bosque iluminado merienda madroños en otoño. El año pasado alguien decidió podar el madroño de casa de mis padres y pensé que desaparecería. Pero no. Este otoño el árbol se ha regenerado y ha producido decenas de frutos. Están deliciosos. ¿Los habéis probado?

Autum in Madrid is rich and colorful. Last Sunday I did a photo shoot with The Illuminated Forest family. What you see in the picture are Madroños which look like little pumpkins. They're actually the fruits of the madroño tree shich shares its ethymology with the name of Madrid. After shooting the whole family I ate half of the madroños. Gee, I ate a bit too many. But it was fun.

Matadero, Madrid's Old Slaughterhouse

MATADERO means slaughterhouse in Spanish and today it has become a thriving cultural center just around the corner of my house. This is the North façade in Paseo de la Chopera (Poplar Grove Promenade). It is a complex of units that includes Cineteca (Film House), Nave 10 and Nave 11 (two stages), a media lab, two restaurants... you name it.
If you come to Madrid you should go for a stroll in Madrid Rio and visit Matadero.

MATADERO alberga el Centro Internacional de Culturas Vivas, valga la ironía. Este dibujo es de la fachada norte que da a la Calle de la Chopera. Los carteles son de las actividades de otoño de 2018, aunque el dibujo base es de marzo, por eso las dos acacias no tienen ni una hoja. Dibujé una hojas amarillas testimoniales que ahora se ven en la rampa de la entrada. Me encanta Matadero. Últimamente se está llenando de vida.

These are a bunch of mini-me's hanging below a gingko tree. Two of them found a new home with Ana and her friend. The other two are looking for adopting parents.

Felix ha encontrado una panda de mini-yos. Dos de ellos se han ido con Ana y los otros dos están buscando alguien cálido que los adopte.

Atocha bonita

The Atocha Railway station is the most Madrilenean place and very close to Paseo de las Delicias where my mother grew up. I now live all the way down close to the river. I love the red of its terracotta  façade and the green of the tropical garden inside. Atocha, like Madrid, welcomes everyone.

La estación de Atocha comenzó siendo un embarcadero en 1851 hasta convertirse en la Estación de Mediodía en 1892. Está cerca del Jardín Botánico y el Retiro. Mi madre creció a unos metros, en el Paseo de las Delicias. Yo ahora relativamente cerca.

We Love Stories

I was asked for an idea that summed up the spirit of the Transmedia Storytelling Department in La Salle CSEU in Madrid. I thought "We love stories" could synthesize something all children and (and healthy adults, ;-)) have in common.
The illustration and words have been printed on black T-shirts for the Emociona Congress in Oviedo taking place today November 17th, 2017. Barry Jenkins is explaining what Transmedia is and why we need to know about it and be intelligent about it. These are some of the sketches and the final illustration.

El Departamento de Narrativas Transmedia me pidió una ilustración para su performance en el Congreso Emociona hoy, 17 de noviembre 2017, en Oviedo. Se me ocurrió que "We Love Stories" sintetiza el espíritu y algo que los niños y los adultos amamos: las buenas historias. Estos son los bocetos y el resultado final que se ha impreso en una camiseta negra.

Bicicleta doblada, folding bicycle

Me quedé helada y doblada cuando escuché que ocho personas habían muerto mientras montaban en bicicleta en NYC. Quiero que el mundo recupere la cordura y que podamos pasear con algo tan pacífico como una bicicleta.

This folding bike illustrates pretty how I felt when I learned about the attack in NYC's bike path. Anything more peaceful and civilized than riding a bicycle? My heart to all those that lost someone or were injured last October 31st.

Bicycles - Bicicletas

When I lived in Copenhagen I bought an old bicycle very similar to this. It was heaby but it made me very happy. For a long time I missed Copenhagen's easy-going life, not even worrying if I left the headlights or the wheel lights over night. I would always find them attached to my bicycle. It is time to revisit Copenhagen.

Con frecuencia me acuerdo de mi año Erasmus y de lo fácil que era vivir cuando mi más preciada posesión era una bicicleta vieja como esta. Me dijeron que en Ámsterdam robaban muchas bicicletas pero en Copenhague nunca oí a nadie quejarse.

My friend Linda lives in Printer's Road, Chicago. She owns this beautiful Brompton bike and she rides to work. She had made it with Chicago's colors, light blue and red. Next time I visit I'll ask her to let me try it.





Esta es la bici de mi amiga Linda que vive en un barrio con rascacielos antiguos llamado Printer's Row. A veces monta su bici plegable para ir al trabajo. Los colores son de la bandera de Chicago. La próxima vez voy a pedírsela prestada.

Boca de Metro

Today I wanted to celebrate that I went to the dentist for a false alarm. So I headed to a cafe and had tea with churros while I sketched Bilbao Square in Madrid.

Pocas cosas me dan tanto miedo como ir al dentista. Hoy ha sido una falsa alarma, así que me he ido a la Glorieta de Bilbao y me he tomado un té con churros. Había una pareja joven desayunando en una mesa, una mujer mendigando y otra esperando.

Escenografía #Dentro de la Tierra

Mónica Bormello has designed the most beautiful set for Paco Bezerra's moving #Dentro de la Tierra, now playing at Valle Inclán Theatre in Madrid. The play is set in a spectral greenhouse. Unforunately, a beautiful tree with bare branches and roots was out of my sight when I sketched the set.

Antes de que comenzara #Dentro de la Tierra de Paco Bezerra pude dibujar la maravillosa escenografía de Mónica Bormello. En este espectral invernadero suceden los sueños y pesadillas del protagonista. La escenografía es maravillosa, lástima que el árbol con sus ramas y raíces desnudas no se veía cuando tomé este apunte. Jorge Calvo hace un trabajo memorable como hermano mediano. Cuando no está en escena uno desea que vuelva.

Anglia Ruskin University Summer Illustration Course

What a blast we students had from the 24th to the 29th of July in Cambridge. The Illustration Summer School at Anglia Ruskin University is really worth it.
We got the best from Ness Wood, Pam Smy and the rest of the wonderful team: David Barrows, Birgitta Sif, Jo Williamson, Mel and Anna Doherty.

We worked hard at the beautiful studios, and got inspiring ideas and breathe from our teachers. On Friday we had our crit groups and I was surprised at the speed people can work. Their picture book dummies were very detailed and round. My story was incomplete but it will come along.

Anyone interested in writing and illustrating a picture book should start with the intensive workshop. Highly recommended!!!

De lana, made of wool

En el taller de David Wiesner aprendimos a esculpir modelos en tres dimensiones de nuestros personajes. Llevaba tiempo queriendo hacerlos de lana y aquí están. Cuánto estoy disfrutando creando escenas de la liebre, el jabalí y el burro en El bosque iluminado.

David Wiesner suggested in an illustration workshop we could try create 3D models of the characters in our picture books. I had a blast creating the hare, the wildboard and the donkey and setting up scenes in nature.

Estudio enmarcado y a color, My studio framed and in color

Me sugirieron que añadiera un toque de color a la ilustración de mi estudio. Aquí está. A cada impresión le doy un color ligeramente distinto. La enmarcación de Alcores es maravillosa.
